After enjoying an advantage by holding the white pawn for the last match, Liem (Elo rating 2710) controlled the tie throughout and went onto enjoy an impressive victory over  No 1 seed Ivanchuk of Ukraine (Elo rating 2713), who was beaten in 35 moves.

The nation’s best chess player ranked third overall at the competition, earning five points from nine matches.

Xiong Jeffery, from the US, (Elo rating 2666) came in first place with six points, whilst Illya of Ukraine (Elo rating 2638) came in second with 5.5 points.

The Spring Chess Classic attracted a total of 10 Grandmasters, each of whom had an Elo rating above 2600.
