Eight more imported cases and 914 local infections have pushed up the daily tally to 922, hitting new all time-high on a single day.
The majority of cases in Ho Chi Minh City involve individuals who came into contact with previously confirmed patients, or are individuals already in areas under lockdown.
The new cases in other localities are either F1 contacts or are closely associated with confirmed outbreaks in isolation areas, with some of the cases currently under epidemiological investigation.
Following the latest cases, the nation has now confirmed 17,199 local infections, in addition to 1,844 imported ones.
As many as 15,629 locally-transmitted cases were detected during the latest COVID-19 wave that initially hit the nation more than two months ago.
The same day saw an additional 248 COVID-19 patients discharged from hospital, bringing the total number of recoveries up to 7,643.
The new patients therefore have propelled Ho Chi Minh City's infection tally to second in the ongoing wave, with more than 5,340 cases being recorded so far.
The southern metropolis is currently suffering from a major COVID-19 outbreak that has attacked an array of local hospitals and offices, with many active cases ongoing whose sources of transmission have yet to be identified.
According to Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Truong Son, Ho Chi Minh City will be provided with nearly one million COVID-19 vaccines in the near future, meaning that the city must devise an urgent plan on how to utilize these doses in an effective manner.
This comes after Ho Chi Minh City administered more than 800,000 doses of the vaccine in mid-June. To date a total of 839,706 people in Ho Chi Minh City have already been vaccinated against COVID-19.
The Deputy Health Minister said that the current pandemic situation in Ho Chi Minh City remains complicated due to its unpredictable nature, especially in terms of the number of new infections. Most notably, over the past 10 days, the number of cases recorded in the city hasn’t fallen under 100, with an average of more than 400 infections per day.
