Among the new cases, HCM City led with 215, Phu Yen (11), Hung Yen (10), Bac Lieu (2) and Bac Ninh (1), of which 206 cases were detected in isolation areas or zones currently in lockdown.
The majority of new cases in HCM City were detected within quarantine and lockdown areas or are being contact traced for epidemiological investigation, while those in other localities are put in quarantine for treatment at local medical facilities.
One day earlier, Vietnam continued to see a sharp increase in fresh local COVID-19 infections, with a total of 545 being recorded, including 527 locally-transmitted cases and 18 imported ones.
Ho Chi Minh City remained the second worst-hit localities in the nation, with 419 domestic infections being registered.
To date, Vietnam has confirmed 16,524 domestic and 1,836 imported cases since the pandemic first appeared in the country early last year.
The number of local infections since the fourth wave of COVID-19 outbreaks that hit the country more than two months ago increased to 14,954, including 4,621 recoveries.
The total recoveries rose to 7,395 after an additional 148 coronavirus patients were declared clear of the virus on July 2, while the fatality count stands at 84.
Meanwhile Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long told a recent meeting of the national steering committee for the 2021-2022 COVID-19 vaccination scheme that Vietnam is making every efforts to finalize vaccination in late 2021 or early 2022.
The nation is poised to receive 30 million doses of vaccines in the third quarter of 2021 and it received commitments to be provided with 105 million doses, Long said, adding that the country is negotiating for an additional 45 million doses this year.
During the meeting, the Minister of Health also urged medical facilities throughout the nation to conduct health screening and classify those aged from 18 and above who plan to be inoculated against COVID-19 as part of the 2021 – 2022 vaccination campaign, the biggest of its kind in the country.
