The suggestion was made during an online meeting on June 9 which was attended by representatives of the Olympic Committees of the participating countries and the Southeast Asian Games Federation Office.

The region’s biggest sporting event was originally scheduled to take place in Hanoi and 11 other cities in Vietnam from November 21 to December 2, 2021. But the complex developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region has forced the host nation to consider delaying the competition to another date.

Representatives of the Olympic Committees of the participating countries expressed their concerns about the fresh COVID-19 outbreak in Vietnam, and shared information relating to the epidemic situation in their countries, said a representative of the meeting.

They acknowledged Vietnam’s proposal and said they would report the matter to their authorities before coming to a conclusion in the next two weeks.

The final decision will be made by the Southeast Asian Games Federation.

Vietnam is battling the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the virus spreading to 39 cities and provinces nationwide. More than 6,000 cases have been confirmed since the virus recurred more than a month ago.
