In the round of 16 Tien Minh faced off against Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia. The gifted Indonesian player had enjoyed a good tournament, even beating world number eight player Srikanth Kidambi in the first round.

The 36-year-old Minh was able to dominate the first set which ended 21-15 in his favour.

The second set saw a reversal in fortunes with the 25-year-old Indonesian star scoring points to level the score to 1-1.

In contrast the third set saw the Vietnamese player score eight consecutive points to lead 9-1. The athlete from Ho Chi Minh City continued his strong performance until the last minute. The final score of the three sets were 21-15, 13-21, 21-13 in favour of Tien Minh.

In the quarter-finals, Nguyen Tien Minh is set to meet either current champion Chen Long or Malaysian Chong Wei Feng. If he makes it to the semi-finals he may have to play the world number one player Kento Momota.

Minh is the last Vietnamese representative at this year’s tournament after Nguyen Thuy Linh suffered a defeat to He Bingjiao.

This is the second time in his career that Tien Minh has made it to the quarter finals. His last time was in 2011 when he eventually lost out to Du Pengyu.
