Liem beat the former world chess champion after 31 moves in the fifth round. Earlier on August 16, Liem lost to Garry Kasparov in the rapid category.

Liem also won over Fabiano Caruano (Elo rating 2807) in the first round of the blitz category. The Vietnamese top chess player concluded nine blitz games with two wins, four draws, ranking the sixth place in the tourney.
