This shift can be attributed to the recent draw with Thailand that took place in the Asian zone’s second qualifying round for the World Cup 2020. In addition to this, Jordan and Armenia, who were ranked below Vietnam, both enjoyed victories in their World Cup 2022 and UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Despite these moves, Vietnam maintained their spot as the highest ranked team in Southeast Asia. Thailand remain 15 places below at 114th in the world.
Elsewhere, the Philippines dropped to 127th place in the rankings while Singapore rose five spots to 157th place.
Malaysia climbed one place to 158th position, while Myanmar fell 10 notches to 145th place, and Indonesia dropped seven spots to 167th place.
Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei all rose by one place to 169th, 187th, and 191th, respectively. Finally, East-Timor enjoyed a move of two places up the rankings to 199th.
Belgium currently tops the global list of national teams with 1,752 points, while France leapfrogged Brazil to rank second with 1,725 points.
The Selecao are ranked third with 1,719 points, while the fourth and fifth places went to England with1,662 points and Portugal with 1,643 points, respectively.
The next date for the updated FIFA rankings will be announced on October 24. If Vietnam can win their World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Malaysia and Indonesia in their upcoming matches, the team will enjoy a further boost in the world rankings.
