Liem (Elo rating 2697) beat his Indian rival Chakkravarthy (Elo rating 2534), in his eighth match of the tournament on the morning of April 9, earning 2.7 Elo points. The strong result saw him improve his Elo rating enough to move back into the list of super grandmasters.

Despite the victory, if Liem is held to a draw or loses his upcoming match against Pichot Alan of Argentina (Elo rating 2566), he will once again drop out of the list.

The Argentine opponent was able to defeat talented young Vietnamese player Nguyen Anh Khoi in his eighth match of the competition.

After eight matches, Liem has so far earned six points, 0.5 points lower than the five leading chess players at the tournament.
