The source did not disclose the name of the new coach, but said the VFF is entering the final round of negotiations with the RoK manager who was introduced by Park.
The VFF is expected to make public the new coach’s profile next week, said the source.
The VFF and Park have agreed that the incumbent coach will no longer lead the national U23 side after the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in May 2022. Park and his students have set a target of defending their championship title in their home turf in May.
The veteran coach said he wants to focus on the senior national team, instead of splitting his time between both U23 and senior national teams as he has done over the past four years.
The VFF was said to early this year contact Kim Gil-sik, 44, who coached Ansan Greeners FC in the K-League 2 in 2021 and the RoK’s national U15 team for the hot seat, but Kim later declined the invitation.
Park’s successor will lead the Vietnamese team to compete in the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup which is set to take place from June 1 to 19 in Uzbekistan. Vietnam have been placed in Group C alongside Thailand, the Republic of Korea (RoK), and Malaysia.
