The snow began to fall at 05.00 am and ended at 06.00 am, according to the Sapa Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre.

Notably, a thick layer of ice and heavy snow was blanketing O Quy Ho Mountain Pass in Sa Pa at a height of 1,500m above sea level.

The strong cold spell also caused heavy snow in Y Ty commune, Bat Xat district, with 5-10 cm thick icy sheets reported.

Cold weather is forecast to continue to plague the district in a couple of days.

Lao Cai province experienced a spat of cold weather with converging winds causing rain and thunderstorms.

At 7 am on February 19, the temperature dropped dramatically to 10.5 degrees Celsius in Lao Cai town, 10 in Bao Yen Township, 5 in Bac Ha town, and minus 2 in Sapa town.
