The waste is buried on a local farm operated by Mr Le Quang Hoa, director of the Urban Environment Company in the Ky Anh District. |
Officials from the province Environment Department say the illegal dumping is horrific, dangerous and a health hazard. |
They have taken samples of the waste for testing to see if it is toxic and are waiting for the results. |
In any event, Formosa Plastics will have to explain why they violated their environmental protection agreement says the Department. |
Urban Environment will also be required to establish its authority for burying the waste on the farm. |
An affiliate of the Formosa Plastics plant has admitted to dumping untreated wastewater from a steel mill operating in Vietnam into the ocean, resulting in massive fish deaths along four coastal provinces earlier this year. |
The Department says the incident is unacceptable. |
Both Formosa Plastics and the affiliated steel mill are members of the Formosa Plastics Group based out of Taiwan. |
