The waste is buried on a local farm operated by Mr Le Quang Hoa, director of the Urban Environment Company in the Ky Anh District.

Officials from the province Environment Department say the illegal dumping is horrific, dangerous and a health hazard.

They have taken samples of the waste for testing to see if it is toxic and are waiting for the results.

In any event, Formosa Plastics will have to explain why they violated their environmental protection agreement says the Department.

Urban Environment will also be required to establish its authority for burying the waste on the farm.

An affiliate of the Formosa Plastics plant has admitted to dumping untreated wastewater from a steel mill operating in Vietnam into the ocean, resulting in massive fish deaths along four coastal provinces earlier this year.

The Department says the incident is unacceptable.

Both Formosa Plastics and the affiliated steel mill are members of the Formosa Plastics Group based out of Taiwan.
