In recognition of World Blood Donor Day, the Vietnam Red Cross will for the first-time ever, sponsor blood drives throughout the metropolitan areas of major cities in the country, reports the Vietnam News Agency in a post on June 12.

In connection therewith, the Red Cross Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation launched the campaign to encourage donors to schedule an appointment to give blood during the month of June yesterday with the assistance of some 500 youth volunteers.

The Steering Committee has also scheduled a live broadcast to be aired in the cities of Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City of a ceremony to recognize past doors for their blood contributions and support of Red Cross initiatives.

Throughout the month of June, the Steering Committee will sponsor a wide array of other activities such as seminars and educational events to raise the general public’s awareness of the need for more blood donations.

Blood is a crucial resource, both for planned treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and it supports complex medical and surgical procedures.

A blood service that gives patients access to safe products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system for the entire nation, said officials of the Steering Committee.

Donating blood or platelets is a simple, safe, and painless process. To donate, you must meet the following requirements: be in good health, be 16 years of age and older, and weigh more than 52 kilos.
