Of the total, only imported case was reported in Tay Ninh province that borders Cambodia. The patient crossed the Moc Bai international border gate into Vietnam and was immediately placed in quarantine upon his arrival.

The remaining 465 people were infected with the virus locally, mostly in southern Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City, the largest coronavirus hotspot in Vietnam, took the lead, with recording 365 cases alone. It was followed by Long An 52, Vinh Long 23, Dong Nai 12 and Tay Ninh 5.

Elsewhere seven new cases were detected in Phu Yen and one in Hanoi capital.

Notably, all 12 cities and provinces in the Mekong River Delta have so far recorded infection. Some of the regional localities emerged as hotspots, logging hundreds of cases.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam on July 12 requested all people returning from epidemic-hit areas must make a health declaration, be placed in quarantine, and undergo a COVID-19 test.   

According to Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen, the virus has spread to 58 out of all 63 cities and provinces in Vietnam since its resurgence in late April. New cases will be detected in the coming days, but the situation remains in check, he said.

Data from the Ministry of Health show July 12 saw 2,383 more cases, setting a new record in terms of the daily caseload.

Vietnam is battling with the latest coronavirus outbreak, with 29,154 new cases recorded as of 06.00am July 13 following the resurgence of the virus on April 27. Overall it has logged a total of 32,665 cases since the virus attacked the country in January 2020.

As many as 9,331 patients have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the disease.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths has risen to 125 after an additional four facilities were announced in July 12.

More than 4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Vietnam, with 280,367 people fully receiving two shots.
