At a workshop focusing on the East Sea dispute co-hosted by the Korean Association of Vietnamese Studies and the Institute of International Cultural Studies of the Chosun University in Gwangju, the Republic of Korea (RoK), on November 29, delegates affirmed the role of the 1982 UN Convention on the law of the sea and the importance of the PCA’s ruling in international and maritime law.
They called on all parties to respect the ruling and abide by international law to resolve disputes in the East Sea by peaceful means.
An exhibition displaying 40 ancient maps depicting the East Sea and photos of shoals, reefs and rocks on the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands was held on the sidelines of the workshop. The photos show China’s island reclamations activities, its militarisation acts, and the impact on regional security, maritime freedom and marine environment.
