While presiding at the meeting of the National Committee for Digital Economy and Society, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha tasked the panel with expediting the development of digital systems across the country and the extension of internet access to residents in every community so as to uplift their quality of life.
During the meeting, the committee endorsed the operational plan for 2017-2021, which will go hand in hand with the 20-year national strategy.
A nod was also given to the draft national electronics plan for 2017-2021, which is set to be forwarded by the Electronic Commerce Committee to the Cabinet for approval before being used as a guideline for both public and private agencies in related fields.
In addition, the board agreed in principle to the five-year operational and budgetary frameworks for the Smart City project proposed by the Digital Economy Promotion Agency.
Within the first year of implementation, smart cities will be set up in the southern, northern and northeastern regions as well as the Eastern Economic Corridor.
All 77 provinces are expected to have their own smart cities within five years.
